This is the website of the artist Nicholas Houghton
My work references the tradition of narrative art, albeit addressing a contemporary social and art context. In the majority of cases I juxtapose images and text, which at first sight might appear to be in opposition, or unrelated, to each other. It might even seem as if they are each telling different stories, or belong to different timeframes. However, each needs the other and when the links are established, together they become much more than the sum of the two parts. The work is multi-media, including lens-based media, drawing, painting and relief sculpture.
My work is fiction. None of it is autobiographical and nor does it describe real events or actual people. On the other hand, it is hoped that the emotions it engenders ring true.
